Mangaluru, June 16: The Mangaluru International Airport has strengthened its runway safety infrastructure with the commissioning of an advanced Category I (CAT-I) lighting system, marking a significant upgrade aimed at improving landing precision and operational reliability.

The new system is designed to enhance runway visibility for pilots during low-visibility conditions such as fog, heavy rain, and night operations. By improving visual guidance during final approach, the upgrade is expected to significantly enhance flight safety and reduce the likelihood of weather-related disruptions.

Airport authorities stated that the installation aligns with global aviation safety standards and reflects continued efforts to modernise critical airside infrastructure. The system is expected to support smoother aircraft operations while ensuring higher levels of safety assurance for both passengers and crew.

The upgrade also positions Mangaluru Airport among select aviation facilities in the region equipped with advanced landing support systems, reinforcing its role as an important regional connectivity hub.

Aviation officials noted that CAT-I lighting systems play a vital role in maintaining operational continuity during challenging weather conditions, enabling safer and more efficient aircraft movements.

The development is part of ongoing infrastructure enhancement initiatives focused on improving passenger safety, operational efficiency, and overall airport performance through technology-driven solutions.
