Chennai, Nov 01: SRM Prime Hospital illuminated its premises in pink as part of its Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaign, aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer and highlighting the importance of regular screening, early detection and timely medical intervention.
Breast cancer is still a health problem all over the world. According to The World Health Organization (WHO) about 2.4 million women were found to have breast cancer and 6,94,000 women died from it in 2024. 80% of breast cancers happen in women who do not have special risk factors except sex and age. This is why awareness is so important for women who have no family history of breast cancer.
Through this initiative, SRM Prime Hospital encourages women to take care of their breast health, get timely medical advice, and know the importance of early diagnosis and individualized care. It also emphasizes the need for a supportive environment to ensure that patient survivors and their families feel heard, understood, and supported throughout their journey.
Dr. Senthil Kumar Ravichander, Clinical Lead & Senior Consultant, Surgical Oncology, Robotic & Laparoscopic and Breast Oncoplastic Surgeon, said, “Surgical options for breast cancer have come a long way. Today, our goal is not just to remove the cancer effectively, but also to preserve the patient’s overall quality of life. When breast cancer is detected early through screening methods such as mammography, breast-conserving surgery will be possible for eligible patients. This approach involves removing the cancerous tumour along with a margin of surrounding healthy tissue while preserving the breast, rather than removing the entire breast. For early breast cancer patients, breast-conserving surgery or oncoplastic techniques are used followed by appropriate radiotherapy and other indicated treatments can offer outcomes comparable to mastectomy in terms of cancer control. Advanced technologies, including robotic-assisted surgery in selected cases, are further expanding surgical possibilities. Our focus is on providing personalised treatment that prioritises effective cancer control, recovery, and quality of life.”
Dr Dheeraj C H, Consultant, Medical Oncology said, “regular screening and timely diagnosis are vital for breast cancer. Screening is useful to detect suspicious changes that may need further evaluation, and appropriate diagnostic tests are important to confirm breast cancer and determine the proper course of treatment. Women need to ensure they are screened for breast cancer on a regular basis, and diagnosed in a timely manner, so they can make informed decisions regarding their treatment”.
Speaking about the initiative Mr. Siva, CEO, SRM Prime Hospital said, "Lighting up our hospital in pink is more than a symbolic gesture; it’s a call to action for our community. Breast cancer can affect anyone, regardless of family history. Through this initiative, we are urging women to take charge of their health through regular screenings and timely medical advice. Beyond clinical care, SRM Prime Hospital remains committed to standing by our patients with holistic emotional support and tailored care throughout their treatment journey."
With its pink lights SRM Prime Hospital wants this visual sign of solidarity to strengthen the message that breast cancer awareness, quick screening and getting proper medical care are essential to better results. The campaign also urges women to watch for changes, in their breasts and to consult a health professional if they see any symptoms.
