Aug13: Ahead of the 80th Independence Day, redBus, an online bus ticketing platform, has launched ‘Travel Equal’, an initiative focused on identifying and addressing the everyday inequalities women experience while travelling. As the first activation under this initiative, redBus has rolled out the Freedom Bottle campaign in Hyderabad, with 45,000 specially designed Freedom Bottles set to be distributed to women travelling on buses equipped with in-bus toilets between 11 and 17 August.

The campaign responds to an everyday but often overlooked challenge in women’s bus travel: uncertainty around restroom access can influence how freely women stay hydrated during long journeys. Freedom Bottle brings attention to this compromise and encourages women to stay hydrated, while highlighting the role of in-bus toilets in enabling a more comfortable travel experience.

The concern extends beyond comfort, with research highlighting the potential health implications of routinely delaying restroom use. A research study published in National Library of Medicine, identified habitual delayed urination as a significant behavioural risk factor for urinary tract infections, with poor sanitary conditions in public toilets cited as a key reason women delay using the restroom.

The relevance of this issue is particularly significant given the scale of women’s intercity bus travel in India. According to the latest redBus India Bus Track 2026 Report, more than 50 million women travelled on intercity buses in India, accounting for 34% of all travellers. While adult women are generally advised to consume around three litres of water and other beverages a day, concerns around clean and reliable restroom access can lead women to consciously reduce their water intake during long-distance travel.

As part of its efforts to enable more informed and comfortable travel choices for women, redBus’ ‘Booking for Women’ mode allows users to filter for buses equipped with in-bus toilets while booking their journey. The feature makes it easier for women travellers to identify and choose bus services with restroom facilities, addressing an important consideration when planning a long-distance journey.

As part of the Hyderabad activation, specially designed Freedom Bottles featuring hydration quantity markings and the message “This bottle comes with restroom assurance” will be distributed exclusively on buses equipped with in-bus toilets. The initiative encourages women to stay hydrated while highlighting the availability of an amenity that can support greater comfort during travel.

Through ‘Travel Equal’, redBus aims to continue developing initiatives that identify and address everyday travel challenges, helping women travel with greater comfort, confidence and dignity.
