Manish Tripathi Highlights Design Innovation and Market Competitiveness at National Handloom Designers’ Conclave 2026

New Delhi, Aug 12: The Office of the Development Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, organised the National Handloom Designers’ Conclave 2026 at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi, bringing together policymakers, designers, textile experts, academicians, cluster designers, master weavers, exporters and retailers to deliberate on strengthening India’s handloom sector through design-led innovation.

The conclave featured a panel discussion on “Design Innovation and Market Competitiveness,” where fashion designer Manish Tripathi highlighted the need for stronger alignment between design innovation and market demand in the handloom sector.

Tripathi stated that design must move beyond aesthetics to become commercially relevant, market-ready and scalable, while retaining the authenticity of India’s traditional weaving heritage. He emphasised that the future of the sector depends on deeper collaboration between designers and artisans to develop products that respond to evolving consumer preferences and global market expectations.

He further noted that strengthening the link between traditional craftsmanship, contemporary design and market competitiveness is essential for improving the positioning of Indian handloom products in both domestic and international markets.

The conclave was inaugurated by Smt. Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, in the presence of Dr. M. Beena, Development Commissioner , Ms. Amrit Raj, Development Commissioner, and Sh. Akhilesh Kumar, DDG, Ministry of Textiles, along with other senior officials and stakeholders.

In her address, Smt. Neelam Shami Rao highlighted the role of institutional support in strengthening the handloom ecosystem, which provides livelihoods to over 35 lakh persons. She noted that 80 design-potential clusters were taken through a structured design process this year, with around 80 designers engaged to support product development, premiumisation and income enhancement for weavers.

Dr. M. Beena underlined the importance of design as a driver of value addition, competitiveness and sustainability in the handloom sector, and reiterated the Ministry’s focus on strengthening designer–weaver collaboration.

The conclave also included thematic panel discussions on “Sustainable Cluster Development and the Future of Indian Handlooms” and “Design Thinking for Value Creation in Indian Handloom.” Experts discussed consumer trends, sustainability, branding, exports, technology integration and strategies to enhance the global competitiveness of Indian handloom products.

The National Handloom Designers’ Conclave 2026 reaffirmed the Ministry of Textiles’ focus on design-led innovation, market expansion and value creation, while reinforcing the role of designers in enhancing the competitiveness of India’s handloom sector.
