Pune, 7th October, 2025: DPU Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri, Pune, successfully managed a rare and life-threatening obstetric emergency, ensuring the survival and recovery of both a mother and her newborn through a complex and multidisciplinary medical intervention.
A 35-week pregnant woman was admitted to the hospital on April 19, 2025, with symptoms later diagnosed as Thrombotic Microangiopathy – a rare, critical condition characterized by characterised by low platelets, low hemoglobin and renal failure. The medical team responded swiftly with an emergency caesarean section, performed in the early hours by Dr. Prashant Suryarao, Consultant Gynecologist at DPU Super Specialty Hospital, to save both mother and baby.
The hospital’s comprehensive infrastructure played a pivotal role in the successful outcome. This included an advanced blood bank, 24/7 transfusion medicine support, a state-of-the-art operation theatre, expert anesthesiology team, and a tertiary-level ICU staffed with intensivists and highly trained critical care nurses.
Post-surgery, the newborn was shifted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), while the mother was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to complications including kidney dysfunction, reduced urine output, rapid haemoglobin decline and red blood cell lysis—symptoms consistent with thrombotic microangiopathy. Prompt laboratory investigations confirmed the diagnosis, and the patient was treated with five sessions of dialysis and plasma exchange therapy.
Thanks to the coordinated efforts of a multidisciplinary team and the hospital’s cutting-edge facilities, the patient made a steady recovery and was discharged on May 3, 2025.
