These guidelines, issued under the Aircraft and Maritime Communications Regulations of 2018, permit mobile communication services only after the aircraft ascends beyond 3,000 meters in Indian airspace. The rule aims to prevent interference with ground-based mobile networks.

Additionally, the newly notified regulations will now be referred to as the Aircraft and Maritime Communications (Amendment) Regulations, 2024. The directive states that, under Sub-rule (1), internet services via Wi-Fi will be allowed once the aircraft reaches a minimum altitude within Indian airspace, provided that the use of electronic devices is permitted at that stage.

This update is part of a newly enforced set of regulations by the government.
